How many books did you read in 2018?
Although writing more is perhaps the best way to write better, a writer’s reading habits can be almost as important. Reading exposes you to other writing styles, voices and plots, and can bring fresh inspiration. Seeing what other writers do well will also help you get a better sense of your own writing style.
Stephen King wrote in his memoirs: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
If you’re unsure about how your reading habits stack up, take a look at this infographic about reading habits around the world. Although Indians, Thais, and the Chinese were the most voracious readers in 2018, Americans were no laggards. 74% of Americans read a book in the past 12 months and 77% of younger Americans admitted to shopping for books.

Europeans tend to own the most books though, with the small country of Estonia taking out top prize. In fact, European households spent more on books last years than they did on luxuries such as package holidays!

The most popular books worldwide in 2018 involved American politics, such as Becoming by Michelle Obama and Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House by Michael Wolff.
Which book will you choose to read next? Regardless of what you choose, you can be sure that that reading more will benefit your mind and body, and help make you a better writer too.
