  3. Katie, now I’m adding detective to your job description. You really found some fabulous tips from great writers.

Too bad I need to tame my creative monster rather than arouse it. Still, if I ever lose my creative muse, I’ll know right where to come!

Thank you Alison. Keep the list in your back pocket just in case your monster goes on holiday.

  4. Love this massive list and your great post, Katie! This is most definitely a bookmark-worthy article.

My own creativity is currently healthy and robust, but I’m still going to spice things up with a couple of these ideas. And, if things head south in the creativity department, there’s some excellent advice here about finding that zip again.

You’ll laugh when you read my blog title today, by the way. It looks like something you’d write :)

Hi Jean, So glad to hear your creativity is robust. Doesn’t surprise me one bit. You are so prolific and talented. I saw your blog title. Great stuff. Nude creativity is in!

  5. All great advice except for one thing: they are advice for someone who writes for a living. The problem with writing for money (and this is just my personal take) is that a critical slice of freedom is taken away — and that is the ability to write from the heart. It is writing that comes unbidden. It flows, it sings. For me, that is true creativity. A thing of beauty, a gift of joy that comes with no price tag.

Hi Rebecca, I love how you describe writing from the heart as unbidden writing that flows and sings. I think that making money from writing doesn’t remove that joy or that heart, as long as what you write about is your truth, your passion and your calling. These writers love to write, have created blogs about their passion and are fortunate enough to make a living at it. I believe their advice is neither diminished nor is their freedom to be creative any less strong because they have been paid to do what they love. Likely, they would write even if they were not paid and I’m sure many do, but I can’t speak for them. Thank you for expressing your personal take.

You might find this apropos of your topic. As they say, a camera is worth a thousand words…

Good link, Rebecca. Here’s a quote, “Some possible cures for writers block: shoot some pictures on a camera that is incredibly difficult to operate; get drunk; try writing on a typewriter that ought to be in a museum. Probably, none of this will work, but you’ll have a little fun while you’re being frustrated.”

  6. God, Katie, if creativity was like sex I’d have none for years!!! Seriously though, some posts show someone’s opinion, insight or learning. Your’s here shows pure effort, research and commitment. I’ve never seen such a comprehensive list with each one being a true nugget. Katie, without a word of a lie, you are fast becoming a top blogger, naked or not!

I am unsubscribing because I am sick of your sexist photos of women on every other post.

    [Reply]

    Katie Reply:

Hello Janet, Sorry to have offended, that was not my intent. It was really just meant to be a fun twist on sparking one’s creativity, but perhaps it went too far in your eyes. I understand. I thought the photo was quite beautiful and subtle. I hope you re-consider unsubscribing as I do believe Write to Done is a wonderful resource for writers. I am quite certain that the editor’s will take your concern very seriously indeed.

  12. Hi Katie,
What a wonderfully inspiring post..Everyone gets stuck in a writing rut and tips like, Leo’s “Play” or John’s “Set a timer challenge” will really help spark creativity and generate ideas. Personally, I have been doing something similar to what Kristen suggests” Have a project day”.
Will surely be trying out some of these tips in the near future:-)
    Best wishes!

    Hi Prerna,

Much appreciated. Writing ruts are not fun and we all are so unique that I think one of these ways tips is likely to create that spark we need at any given time. I’m glad you’ll turn to them when you need them.

  13. Gee, all this sex! Am I on the right blog??

    :::checks:::

Yup. lol Well I’d reverse “creativity is like sex” and say that sex is creativity and what I really need to get going with my writing is a good old-fashioned….. OOOOPPS wrong blog!

Awesome list, Katie :D Definitely deserves to be bookmarked or printed out as a referral. It could be like a daily affirmation list, or something like that. What a lot of work went into it! Thanks :)

Love your light-hearted sense of humour, Leah. Embracing the list as an affirmation of all that is sexy and wonderful about creativity is very healthy and hopefully will spark a lot more than creativity for you Leah. Hehehehe.

  15. What an awesome post Katie. There is no doubt that you are 1. Very well read and 2. Care deeply about this topic. Such genuine writing. I am headed to the lake this weekend to clear the clutter and a few of these were perfect for my list.

I loved your intro too. Your use of words (quite seductive ones in fact) to convey something as important as creativity, was poetic. Nicely done! You are a on a roll.

  16. Excellent reminders Katie.

Right now I am trying to focus on allocating a block of time to writing and committing to it no matter what.

I’m sure I will need a lot of the advice listed here at one point or another. I’m going to print this one and keep it handy.

Thank you for taking the time to write this post.

  20. Well, I’m printing this post and “posting” it above my desk…I love #129 (make lists) and #130 (don’t make lists)!! It all boils down to “whatever works”, I guess.

    Katie Reply:

Cheryl, don’t you love contradiction. You hit the nail on the head. It is all about what works for you. Lists work for some and not for others. That’s what makes our creative natures so unique and varied, along with our art. Thanks for commenting, printing and posting. That’s awesome.
