Just as people with a great sense of humour are likeable – writing which employs humour tactfully, gains a much greater appreciation by the reader.

Not to mention… humour makes people feel good. Laughter makes people feel good.

Humour is a winning proposition.

These are great points about using humor. It is particularly important to have bits of humor in more serious works. Lightening the mood is always a way to give the reader perspective on the graveness of whatever situation is at hand. Great post.

Technically, I think humour is an excellent way of giving your writing great rhythm. It can help lift a reader and deflate them (in a good way) in equal measure – the textbook build up and then a gag to undercut the tension.

Really though, I reckon humour and writing work together best when it comes natural and part of the writer’s personality. If you think, ‘I’ll make this bit hilarious,’ you probably won’t manage it.

Just write and don’t think about it too much – let your funny bone do it’s thang.

I think keeping the audience engaged and providing punctuation and flow are the two most important benefits of using comedy in your non-comedy writing. Humor is key–I know of no other way short of sensationalization and death threats to keep an audience’s attention. And comedy at its finest is all about timing. Master comedy and you master writing with perfect flow and punctuation.
